Correntes de Ouro: Emigração Portuguesa para a Argentina em Perspectiva Regional e Transatlântica

Abstract
"At that time those who came from Argentina knew each other by the moustache and some chains which they called chains - that was gold, do you understand?"
These words evoke a familiar image of the apogee years of transatlantic emigration in the Algarve in the first decades of the 20th century when Argentina emerged as the most sought-after migratory destination. The growing cities of a rapidly expanding nation, the fertile prairies of the pampas, and the oil fields of Patagonia were, for most migrants, lands capable of producing success stories such as those that heralded the gold currents that many exhibited in the return to earth. Why did the Algarvian migrants prefer Argentina, thus building an alternative pattern to the general trend in most other Portuguese regions in these years of massive transatlantic emigration? Starting from this question, Correntes de Ouro presents a social history of Portuguese emigration to Argentina, placing this regional case in the broader context of the migratory systems that connected Portugal and other countries of emigration in Europe with multiple international destinations. The book proposes a multifaceted history that examines family strategies and individual migratory paths in the context of the social networks that underpinned them, compares the social and economic adaptation of migrants and their descendants in host societies of diverse nature, portrays the experiences of migrants Portuguese regions of Argentina, and combines local perspectives on both sides of the Atlantic.
Resumo
«Naquele tempo os que iam da Argentina se conheciam pelo bigode e umas correntes as que chamavam eles cadenas – aquilo era ouro, compreende?» Estas palavras evocam uma imagem familiar dos anos de apogeu da emigração transatlântica no Algarve, nas primeiras décadas do século XX, quando a Argentina emergiu como o destino migratório mais procurado. As cidades em crescimento de uma nação em rápida expansão, as férteis pradarias das pampas e os campos petrolíferos da Patagónia eram, para a maioria dos emigrantes, as terras capazes de produzirem histórias de sucesso como as que anunciavam as correntes de ouro que muitos exibiam no regresso à terra. Porque é que os emigrantes algarvios preferiram a Argentina, construindo assim um padrão alternativo à tendência generalizada na maioria das outras regiões portuguesas nesses anos de emigração transatlântica maciça? Partindo desta pergunta, Correntes de Ouro apresenta uma história social da emigração portuguesa para a Argentina colocando este caso regional no contexto mais amplo dos sistemas migratórios que conectaram Portugal e outros países de emigração na Europa com múltiplos destinos internacionais. O livro propõe uma história multifacetada que examina as estratégias familiares e os percursos migratórios individuais no contexto das redes sociais que os sustentaram, compara a adaptação social e económica dos migrantes e dos seus descendentes em sociedades de acolhimento de natureza diversa, retrata as experiências de migrantes portugueses de várias regiões na Argentina, e combina perspectivas locais de ambos os lados do Atlântico.
