The Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences, founded in 1970, is one of the research institutes of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. It is the only institute for advanced research in the humanities and social and behavioural sciences in the Netherlands, and it plays a major role in the development of research in these fields in the country.
With the objective to foster advanced research in these intellectual areas, NIAS offers optimal conditions to the invited fellows to bring out the best of their intellectual creativity and stimulates scholarly interaction in an interdisciplinary and international setting. What NIAS sets out to do is to create conditions for the transgression of the boundaries of disciplines and subdisciplines. This results in a crossfertilisation across research fields and leads to strong stimuli for intellectual creativity. The best work is often to be found at the convergence points of disciplines where methodologies drawn from several fields are indispensable. Each year, the Institute invites around 50 carefully selected scholars.
In August 2016, NIAS has moved from Wassenaar to the heart of Amsterdam. The Institute is now located in the elegant St Jorishof building situated in an enclosed garden just off the famous Kloveniersburgwal. The building, which was built in 1747 as a residential home for the Burghers of Amsterdam, provides at least thirty offices for scholars from the Netherlands and abroad to work on their research project for one or two semesters.
Fellows from abroad are offered accommodation in Amsterdam: either a studio apartment in Kloveniersburgwal 23, a historic building just a minutes’ walk away, or a larger apartment a tram-ride away for those bringing their families.
NIAS is committed to providing researchers, from a variety of disciplines, with the time and space for reflection and the development of new research directions. By moving to central Amsterdam, within easy access to academic institutions, scholars and sources, NIAS hopes to stimulate the exchange of ideas, improve access to knowledge and encourage the formation of new research networks.
The Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences is open to the entire field of the humanities and social and behavioural sciences.
Preference is given to applicants who propose an interdisciplinary project.
Applications by former NIAS Fellows and scholars at the end of their career will be given low priority.
NIAS welcome applicants from the life and exact sciences exclusively if the proposed research projects interface with the humanities and/or social sciences.
